You have to be truly selfish before you can be truly selfless

You have to be truly selfish before you can be truly selfless.

When you get on an aeroplane before flying abroad, a few things happen as standard practice. You need your boarding pass, your passport is checked, the cabin crew welcome you aboard, you take your seat.

Then the rather mundane safety demonstration or video occurs. The bit of that safety demo that always struck me, was the bit about the oxygen mask.

Everyone knows what I’m talking about ‘if the oxygen mask drops, make sure you place your own on first before helping your children or anyone else’.

I think this should be a great analogy for all our lives. You have to look after yourselves before you can properly look after anyone else. You have to be truly selfish before you can be truly selfless.

You can’t help someone be fit and healthy, if you are really unfit and unhealthy. You can’t help someone create wealth and be financially savvy, unless you are both of those things yourself. You can’t advise or coach someone with wisdom, insight and knowledge, if you have never invested in yourself to have those things.

You cannot care, love or nurture someone else, if you can care, love or nurture your very own being.

Be selfish. Become your very best self, in all facets of life, then you can be the most selfless person in the world. The results for you and others are always loads better.
